Happy Celiac Awareness Month! 🌸
May is Celiac Awareness Month! May is such a special month to me because it’s a time to spread extra awareness for celiac disease. Lots of organizations and gluten-free brands also participate in spreading information and awareness on what it’s like to be diagnosed and to live with celiac disease.
Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disease, where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine. It occurs in genetically predisposed people and can be diagnosed at any age. The damage occurs to the villi, small fingerlike projections that promote nutrient absorption. When villi become damaged, nutrients cannot be properly absorbed which often leads to nutrient deficiencies and even malnutrition. Celiac disease often takes years to diagnose because it presents differently for everyone and sometimes people experience no symptoms at all. This is a huge reason why celiac awareness month is so important!
If you’re new here, welcome! I have lived with celiac disease for 15 years and my celiac diagnosis led me to become a registered dietitian. I have lots of information to share with you! You can also check out the archives here.
